What is Flathead Lake Resort and why is OutofNorm.al asking me to apply?

Hey everyone — Josh and Brittain here! So glad you found us and are interested in learning more about working and living in the beautiful Flathead Valley of Montana for the summer of 2021.

Josh and I will be leading the charge at the Flathead Lake Resort next year — a charming 12-cabin getaway on Flathead Lake (private lake access!) owned by Jenny and Chris. We’ll also be bringing our vintage campers into the mix and setting them up at the full-hookups on site to be rented out on AirBnB.

Josh and I have six years of AirBnB experience running both a small hostel in Kansas City and our ‘88 Airstream in KC and at a vintage campground in Tucson. We are stoked for this amazing opportunity to work with Flathead Lake Resort and to be surrounded by such cool people in an incredible (and fun!) area. And we are thrilled to bring on board a team who enjoys working with people, loves the outdoors and who wants to be part of the Flathead Lake family.

What does the job look like, you ask?

Everybody does everything. We’re not a tiered workplace. You clean, I clean, we all clean. Then we eat some ice cream! :)
In all businessy-seriousness though, everyone will be asked to help with the following:

  • Greet guests, help with check-in

    • help guests plan their stay (where to hike, where to eat, how to get to Glacier NP)

  • Clean, turnover rooms/shower house for the next guest, run laundry

  • Guest Communications

    • work the online booking system

    • answer emails/phone calls

  • Have fun

    • swim in the lake, go on hikes, eat around town, enjoy live music

  • Light construction

    • fix things that break

    • paint rooms/buildings

  • Keep the grounds clean — (mow/lawn/yard work)

    • help keep the flowers alive

  • Share photos for social media

  • Host campfires

Our ideal team will be made up of people with a ‘can do’ attitude, who want to be in the Montana/Glacier area and who are genuinely excited about hospitality and making others happy! You’ll need to come ready with top notch customer service skills and an intra/entrepreneur-like mindset — you’re willing to make decisions and take initiative on your own.

Hiring RV Couples.
If you are a solo RVer, you are welcome to apply too. Please know though, that individuals will likely have longer shifts than an RV couple who would be splitting duties.

Work Perks

  • Potential for full-RV hookup site expenses covered

    • more info upon application submission and ‘meeting’ via phone

  • A work hard, play harder atmosphere

  • Super flexible scheduling. Other than cabin/camper turnovers which need to be completed from 9am —2pm every day, schedules can be flexible

  • Are you an entrepreneur? Bartender? Build your business or work another job during your time off!

  • Shortened shifts — not your typical 8 hour work day! (for couples)

    • longer shifts for individuals

  • Four day work weeks giving you more time to explore! (for couples)

    • Individuals will have a combination of four day+five day work weeks

  • Flexible time off (we will do our best to work with everyone’s schedule to allow for multi-day getaways so you can camp and explore the nearby towns, forests and maybe even scamper over the border to Canada for a visit to Banff!)

    • our goal is to have a rockstar team that will work double time during the ‘on hours’ so you can explore double time, during the off hours. (Hours will be determined by the amount of guests checking in/checking out. June/July/August are peak travel months.)

  • But let’s be real for a minute — with private lake access and Woods Bay within walking distance, you’re not going to want to leave the resort. It’ll be more like play time than work time.

  • Unlimited paddle board/kayak use on Flathead Lake!

  • Date nights on us at the local Bigfork Playhouse (Broadway Shows).

  • Team outings. This could look like Thursday night rodeos, Friday night concerts…campfires, game nights.

  • When your work is done — you’re done. No sticking around to wait out the time clock.

    • this means — you were scheduled for a 6 hour shift, but you got done in 5 hours? Cool! Bravo to you! You’re done for the day.

Cool things in the immediate area:

If we’re not careful, we’ll write a thousand words here on EVERYTHING you could do to stay busy around the area, so we’ll keep it to what’s in the immediate area and a few other key notes:

Woods Bay — (walking or paddle boarding distance from the resort!) The Sitting Duck (dive restaurant and karaoke), The Raven (Caribbean style vibe, live music and perfect sunsets), Bonfire (classy, deliciously flavored dishes), Woods Bay Wine (for tastings and a global selection), Saddlehorn Bar and Grill (the epitome of a lakeside bar)…all of this within walking distance of the resort!

Bigfork (8 min drive) — Max’s Market (organic foods market), Bigfork Playhouse (must see Broadway shows!), Saketome (some of the best Sushi on the planet!), Tradition’s (for romantic dinner dates), the entire downtown Bigfork for farmer’s market, live music every Sunday…and Monday…and the weekends at different bars…cafe on the river, summer art fair, river walk and trail (for walking, running, biking)…so much to keep you entertained for weeks!

Nearby towns (15 - 40 minutes away) — From Somers to Lakeside and Kalispell to Whitefish and Columbia Falls, there’s always something going on. From live music to festivals, fairs and rodeos…from breweries and distilleries, to hikes and more hikes — great for dogs and bikes alike — there’s always something going on. AND, let us not forget — Glacier National Park — is just 45 minutes north!

FCA Airport + Amtrak are super accessible. Oh, and there’s a Costco in Kalispell! …yeah, we know you were wondering!
